DMC 154 to Sullivans: Thread Conversion

Sullivans 45469 is a close match in the ultra-dark grape range, covering the warm, rich deep purple-red territory. Confirm the shade reads as a warm, red-leaning dark grape rather than a cool blue-violet or a flat dark maroon before committing to a project where the warm purple identity is important. At very dark values, pigment density differences between brands become most apparent and most consequential: a thread with insufficient dye concentration will look thin or slightly dusty against light fabric, undermining the rich, saturated quality that 154 needs to deliver its imperial depth and gothic gravitas. Test coverage on your project fabric with two strands before filling large areas — if the thread appears paler or less dense than expected, a small tension adjustment or slightly shorter working lengths can sometimes improve the coverage. Sullivans thread construction can differ from DMC's in ways that affect both stitch texture and coverage density, so the test step is genuinely worthwhile. Run a colorfastness check as well: deep grape and plum dyes from any brand can bleed in warm water, and the consequences are more severe the larger the area you've stitched — better to discover a bleeding issue on a test thread than in a finished piece. Hand wash with cool water and minimal agitation if the piece needs cleaning.
