Free Cross-Stitch Pattern Roundups

This is the Stitchies curated free-pattern library: themed roundups that point you to real, downloadable free cross-stitch patterns from trusted sources. Every link has been selected for reliability — no invented URLs, no patterns that are "free" only after a paid subscription, and no low-quality aggregators that exist only to collect email addresses. Whether you are planning your first project or looking for a quick seasonal make, start here and find a pattern that is ready to stitch.

How This Library Works

Each themed roundup page lists seven to ten free pattern sources for that category. Sources include DMC's own free-pattern library, Better Cross Stitch, AllCrafts.net, LoveCrafts, Stitch Fiddle, Cyberstitchers, and the r/CrossStitch community. For each source we note the difficulty level, approximate stitch count where known, and file format so you know what you are downloading before you click.

We link to pattern sites' main free-pattern landing pages rather than deep URLs that may change over time. If a site reorganizes its pattern library, the landing page link will still get you where you need to go. This approach keeps links reliable over months and years rather than surfacing broken links to specific pattern files.

Each roundup also includes tips on thread palette planning for that theme, with links to the corresponding Stitchies color guides for specific DMC thread numbers.

Thread Planning After You Choose a Pattern

Most free cross-stitch patterns specify DMC thread numbers in their color key. If you have a different brand on hand — Anchor, Madeira, Cosmo, or Sullivans — use Stitchies to find the nearest equivalent color in your brand. Each color page on this site shows verified cross-brand conversions with match quality ratings so you can see whether the substitute is a close match or just the nearest available option.

You can also browse by color family to see all DMC colors in a range (blues, reds, greens, etc.) and compare them side by side — useful when a pattern requires several shades of the same color family and you want to plan the full palette before buying thread.

Explore cross-stitch guides for technique and thread advice, browse color families for palette planning, or search thread conversions to find brand equivalents.
