Free Halloween Cross-Stitch Patterns
Halloween is one of the most prolific seasons for cross-stitch pattern releases, with designers dropping free charts every October. Pumpkins, black cats, haunted houses, skeletons, bats, and witches translate beautifully to stitched designs — and the high-contrast orange-and-black palette is forgiving for beginners. The sources below offer genuinely free Halloween patterns ranging from small single-motif cards to full 200-stitch sampler compositions. No pattern subscriptions, no hidden paywalls.
Free Halloween Pattern Sources
DMC Free Patterns — Halloween Collection
DMC releases seasonal free patterns throughout the year, and their Halloween offerings are among the most polished available. Expect pumpkin motifs, ghost alphabets, haunted house scenes, and spooky border designs — all with official DMC color keys. Stitch counts typically run 80x100 to 180x200, suited for 14-count Aida producing finished pieces in the 6x7 to 13x14 inch range. The designs lean toward whimsical rather than gory, making them suitable for all ages.
Difficulty: beginner to intermediate. Format: PDF with DMC color key.
Better Cross Stitch — Halloween Patterns
Better Cross Stitch's free Halloween section includes jack-o'-lanterns, black cat silhouettes, spider webs, and "Trick or Treat" lettering samplers. Their patterns tend to be compact — many under 80x80 stitches — making them ideal for greeting cards, small frames, or Halloween ornaments. Good first Halloween project for stitchers still building their skills.
Difficulty: beginner. Format: PDF.
AllCrafts.net — Halloween Cross-Stitch
AllCrafts aggregates Halloween cross-stitch patterns from hundreds of independent designers, linking to original source pages. The Halloween section is particularly deep, covering everything from minimalist pumpkin silhouettes to elaborate gothic manor samplers. Some older links may be inactive, but the sheer volume of options means there is something for every skill level.
Difficulty: varies. Format: linked PDF and image files.
r/CrossStitch — Free Halloween Pattern Threads
In September and October, the r/CrossStitch subreddit fills with free Halloween pattern giveaways from community designers. Free Pattern Friday threads from those months are an excellent resource. Search "free pattern halloween" to surface relevant posts. Patterns range from adorable to genuinely spooky, and community comments often include tips on thread substitutions.
Difficulty: varies. Format: image charts, PDF links.
Stitch Fiddle — Halloween Community Patterns
Stitch Fiddle's public pattern library includes a large Halloween section from community contributors. Because the site is a design tool, many patterns are pixel-perfect geometric designs — pumpkin faces, skull grids, and bat silhouettes that look great in the bold black-and-orange palette. Patterns are viewable in browser and printable without creating an account.
Difficulty: beginner to intermediate. Format: browser-viewable chart.
Cyberstitchers — Halloween Free Patterns
Cyberstitchers' free pattern library has an established Halloween section with traditional cross-stitch designs: witch silhouettes against moons, haunted house borders, and text-based "Happy Halloween" samplers. The text-format charts work on any count fabric and print cleanly even on basic inkjet printers.
Difficulty: beginner to intermediate. Format: text chart.
LoveCrafts — Free Halloween Cross-Stitch
LoveCrafts releases free seasonal patterns from their designer community, and Halloween typically brings a wave of new free releases in September. Their free patterns are professionally charted with complete color keys. A free account is required, but the quality is noticeably higher than most aggregator sites — these are market-ready designs offered free as promotional samples.
Difficulty: intermediate. Format: PDF. Free account required.
Tips for Halloween Pattern Success
The orange-and-black Halloween palette looks deceptively simple, but orange is one of the trickier DMC colors to get right. DMC 740 (Tangerine) runs very vivid and warm — great for bright, cartoonish pumpkins. DMC 721 (Medium Orange Spice) reads more traditional pumpkin-orange and suits realistic designs better. DMC 922 (Light Copper) adds a warm burnt-orange depth to pumpkin shading.
Black-on-orange or orange-on-black designs look best on neutral or white Aida rather than black fabric. Stitching orange thread on black fabric is significantly harder: the thread tends to pull fabric fibers through and the contrast makes counting errors harder to spot. White or antique white 18-count Aida is the most forgiving choice for detailed Halloween patterns.
