DMC 746 to Cosmo: Thread Conversion

Cosmo 140 is a close match for DMC 746 Off White. At near-white values, the subtle sheen difference between Cosmo and DMC thread can be more perceptible than the color difference itself: near-whites have minimal pigment load, which means the fiber’s surface quality — how it interacts with light, how it reflects, whether it reads as soft-matte or slightly luminous — contributes proportionally more to the visual impression than it does for deeper, more opaque threads. Cosmo’s slightly silkier finish gives their off-white a slightly different quality in the finished piece, not better or worse than the DMC original but meaningfully different in character: the Cosmo version may read as slightly more luminous and polished, while the DMC version reads as more matte and traditional. This sheen difference is not a concern for designs where off-white is used throughout from a single brand, but becomes visible if Cosmo 140 is mixed with DMC 746 in adjacent areas of the same design: the two may read as slightly different textures even when the color matches closely. For heritage and reproduction sampler work where the overall surface quality of the piece is part of the aesthetic — where the matte, traditional quality of the thread matters to the period character — using the same brand consistently for all near-white areas avoids creating unintended surface variation. For modern and decorative designs where a slightly luminous off-white is acceptable or desirable, Cosmo 140 is a workable close substitute.
