How We Calculate

Each cross stitch is made up of two diagonal passes forming an X. On N-count fabric, each stitch spans 2.54 / N centimeters. The thread for one complete stitch travels approximately:

thread per stitch = (2.54 / fabric_count) × 2 × strands (cm)

The × 2 accounts for the two diagonal legs of the cross. We multiply by the number of strands because more strands means more thread consumed per stitch.

Here is the full formula:

  1. Total stitches = width × height × coverage%
  2. Thread per stitch = (2.54 / fabric_count) × 2 × strands (in cm)
  3. Total thread = total_stitches × thread_per_stitch × 1.2 (20% waste factor)
  4. Skeins needed = total_thread / 800 cm per skein, rounded up

A standard DMC embroidery floss skein contains 8 meters (8.7 yards) of 6-strand thread. The 20% waste factor accounts for thread used when starting and ending each length, anchoring stitches, and traveling between stitch areas on the back of the fabric.

The per-color estimate assumes thread is evenly distributed across all colors. In practice, dominant colors (like backgrounds) will need more skeins while accent colors need less. Check your pattern's color chart for a more accurate per-color breakdown.

Tips for Buying Floss

  • 1. Buy by dye lot. Purchase all skeins of the same color at once. Different production runs can have subtle shade differences that show up in large stitched areas.
  • 2. Round up, not down. It is always better to have a leftover half-skein than to run out mid-project and risk a dye lot mismatch.
  • 3. Check your pattern. Many cross-stitch patterns include a thread requirements list. Use this calculator as a second opinion or when the pattern does not list quantities.
  • 4. Account for backstitching. This calculator covers cross stitches only. If your design includes backstitching, add roughly 10-20% more thread for outlined colors.
