For gray substitutions in general, comparing swatches stitched on the actual project fabric in the same lighting conditions you stitch under is the most reliable approach, and this applies particularly to Cosmo 174 at this light-to-mid gray value. The most important test for animal fur and bird feather work is whether Cosmo 174 reads as a consistently warmer-neutral gray alongside the other grays in your palette, or whether it appears as a slightly different temperature at the 748 position. For stone-texture and atmospheric work where gray temperature precision is less critical, Cosmo 174’s close-match performance is typically adequate. The Cosmo thread’s pleasant working quality and clean separation from the skein make it a practical choice for large fill areas where the stitching experience matters as much as the precise color result.
