The value placement — a light-to-mid gray, lighter than the standard pewter gray of DMC 317 and darker than the very light pearl gray of DMC 762 — needs to be correct for 748 to function in its typical mid-highlight role in gray gradient sequences. Madeira’s gray tones can read slightly differently depending on the thread’s finish and the ambient light, and the close rating means some hue drift from the DMC original’s slightly warm character is possible. Assessing Madeira 1803 alongside the other grays in your palette before purchase is worthwhile, particularly confirming the temperature reads as consistently warm-neutral rather than as cooler than the surrounding values.
